Twisted Kismet

The sometimes crazy road from here to there

What makes you happy?

That is sort of a rhetorical question, one that I ask myself periodically.  It is the nicer cousin to the most dreaded and hated question “what do you do for fun?”.  I still stutter when answering that one.  Um, apparently nothing?  Sorry, digressed for a moment.

It has long been said that if you find your passion, or what makes you happy, then money will follow and your work will not seem like work.  What is it like to spend your days doing a job that you love?  I ended up in a career that is not exactly fun and not likely one I would choose again.  I have spent nearly a lifetime in envy of those who have found a career they love.

So back to the question.  I suppose I am still working on this, still pondering it.  I do love to travel and so you will see pictures from various favorite travel spots.  These are from the Bar Harbor area in Maine.  Jordan Pond (below) was one of the most peaceful – and beautiful – places I have ever been.  So yes, that made me happy.   And, of course, ice cream makes me happy.

Too bad a person can’t make a living by sitting next to a pond in a national park eating ice cream.  I’d be all over that.

I recently have found a certain satisfaction in writing about achieving goals, living your best life, and embracing change. Helping other people get through or deal with life changes is an awesome thing.  So perhaps that is what really makes my soul happy.

I suppose that I am fortunate to really love my work… most of the time. The past few years have been boring because of the economy. This year though… Wow! Just as quickly as things slowed down, now suddenly, things are speeding up. I like it fast paced and busy. I get to the end of the day and wonder where it went! There are many other things that also make my soul happy but they are mainly people.

But what is it about your CAREER that makes you love it? I like my current job, it’s the career I don’t care for. lol

I contract with small manufacturing companies to find them customers. They do not tell me how or when to work but I have to keep them happy. There is a lot of control and freedom in that. I get to see how things are made. I get to meet new people frequently. I get to solve problems and provide solutions. I also get told no a lot but I just move on to the next one. It is not perfect. It definitely has a side that is boring and sometimes unpleasant. If I don’t sell anything, I do not make any money. But, its a good fit for me. I do love it.

Telling stories works for me – but it’s tough to still need a “better than survival” wage. Performing can’t get me there – certainly not with the budget cuts and money woes everywhere.
